Marty McDermott currently serves as the Director of Athletics at Kirtland Community College in Grayling, Michigan, a position he assumed in November 2024. In this role, he provides administrative oversight for a 10-sport intercollegiate athletics program, continuing a distinguished career in collegiate athletics leadership that spans more than three decades.

Prior to joining Kirtland, McDermott spent over 18 years at Muskegon Community College, most recently as Dean of College Services and Athletics from 2016 to 2024. As a senior member of the college’s leadership team, he oversaw 18 NJCAA sports serving approximately 250 student-athletes, managed an annual budget of $2.5 million, and supervised more than 30 full-time and part-time staff members. His administrative responsibilities included eligibility, compliance, travel, financial aid, sports information, media relations, fundraising, and auxiliary services such as conference and catering operations, the campus bookstore, scheduling, a golf course, and a third-party fitness center. He also served as a member of the President’s Cabinet for 14 years, co-chaired the Crisis Prevention Team, acted as Deputy Title IX Director, and was the administrative lead for the design and construction of MCC’s Health and Wellness Center.

From 2007 to 2016, McDermott served as Director of Athletics at Muskegon Community College (MCC), where he provided leadership for 14 NJCAA sports, supervised 20 coaches and staff, and managed a $1.5 million annual athletics budget. During his tenure, he successfully proposed and implemented the expansion of the athletic program from eight to 18 sports and led innovative marketing initiatives that enhanced the visibility of MCC athletics. His accomplishments include being named MCCAA Athletic Director of the Year in 2012, overseeing a 2010 NJCAA National Championship in Softball, and supporting 29 regional championships and 21 MCCAA championships. He continues to serve as Head Men’s Golf Coach at MCC.

At the state level, McDermott has held numerous leadership roles within the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA), including President (2012–2016), Vice President (2009–2011; 2024–present), state chair for men’s basketball, wrestling, and soccer, and member of the Finance Committee.

Earlier in his career, McDermott served as Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Associate Athletic Director at the University of Dubuque, where he directed a Division III basketball program while overseeing game management operations for 19 sports, fundraising initiatives, compliance support, and travel logistics. He began his collegiate head coaching career at Lake Superior State University, leading the NCAA Division II men’s basketball program to historic success, including back-to-back winning seasons, GLIAC tournament appearances, regional rankings, and significant fundraising achievements.

McDermott holds a Master of Science in Education with an emphasis in Sport Management and Administration from Wayne State College and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from the University of North Dakota. He is a longtime member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and previously held membership in the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
